Movie Review Of The Princess And The Frog

This beautifully animated 2-D movie is set in New Orleans during the Great Depression and introducesDisney's first African-American lead character. In the movie, our lead character Tiana encounters a frog but unbeknownst to her, he is really a prince.  The frog begs her to kiss him, hoping that her kiss will turn him back into a human prince.  In exchange for her kindness, he gives his word that he will help her attain her lifelong goal of having her own restaurant.

The plan backfires and Tiana becomes a frog herself!  The two are sent on a wild journey through the Louisiana Bayou in search of a witch doctor, the only one who can return them back into human form.  However, time is of the essense!  If they don't reach the medicine man in time to undo the curse, Tiana and the prince will live the rest of their lives as frogs.

Along their journey they meet fantastic characters, including a trumpet-playing alligator, a lovesick Cajun butterfly and a blind old woman living in a tree in her boat-house.  The pair of frog-humans find their way through the dark Bayou in search of the Voodoo Queen who lives there.  She is the only one who can undo the wicked hex and turn Tiana and her prince friend back into humans.

In the meantime, the evil Doctor Facilier, the man who put the spell on the frogs in the first place, learns that the two are searching for the queen so he heads off to stop them.  To get extra assistance, Dr. Facilier enlists the help of the Voodoo spirits and tells them that if they capture Tiana and the prince, he will give them all the souls in New Orleans.

This film is fantastically animated in an old, rich style and is paired with toe-tapping music that you'll be singing to yourself the rest of the day.  The well-developed and interesting characters will find friends with audiences of any age.  It's nice to finally see some real "color" in an animated feature movie.

While this might not become a Disney top-shelf classic, it is definitely a good movie to have in your personal library.  You are sure to enjoy the songs and while the animation takes a minute or two to get used to, you'll find yourself loving the style, too.This movie is no technical slouch, either.Because of the complexity of the animation and the unforgettablesongwriting, the movie receivedthree Oscar Nominations, two for Best Original Song and the other for Best Animated Feature.

There's no other Disney film quite like it but if you're a parent of movie buffs, you're sure to approve of this one!
